Other plugins I've seen that have to interact with joomla load the framework on their own. See the code for Joomla FCKEditor's Jlink plugin, specifically the config.php file.

That's good information, and thank you, but my issues seems to be that it doesn't even recognize the JFactory classes. I have tried to implement it, and it either comes back as class not defined or doesn't have values for the user. The factory.php is supposed to be native to the Joomla framework, but doesn't seem to be in my case.
